HOW TO CALL IN YOUR TIP

1. Call the TIPS line at:
    1-800-458-TIPS (8477)
2. DO NOT GIVE YOUR NAME. Say you are a     Student Caller.

3. Give the information about any criminal     activity at school, on school grounds, or in     the community. You may be asked some     questions but you will NOT be asked to give     your name.
4. You will be given a code number and     instructions when to call back to find out     the progress on your tip. It is your     responsibility to remember and protect that     code number. It is your only connection to     the case.
5. If the information you gave results in     a success you will be given further     instructions how to collect your reward.

The Student Crime Stoppers TIPS line does not use Caller I.D., *69, or any other device to identify a caller. Since 1994, the Student Crime Stoppers line has received over 200 calls. These calls have helped your schools remain safe while not knowing whom the student caller was. REMEMBER: Do not give your name!

The Start of Student Crime Stoppers

In 1994, Program Coordinator, Sgt. Jim DeFago, presented a new concept for the extension of the Crime Stoppers program to the Board of Directors. He was given the Board's approval to start a Student Crime Stoppers program aimed at middle, high, and alternative schools in Palm Beach County.

After obtaining the Superintendent of Schools, Monica Ulhorn's enthusiastic commitment, Sgt. DeFago began the process of informing the school administration about the program and supplying sufficient materials to inform students about how to use it. The Student Crime Stoppers program is similar to the adult program except the student cases do not have to lead to an arrest (they may be administrative issues) and the caller may receive up to a $100 reward.

In the first five years of the program, nearly 200 case calls were received which led to the following types of crimes solved: Arson, Burglary, Fraud, Grand Theft, Narcotics, Theft, Tobacco, Vandalism and the removal of nearly 20 weapons.

With the tragic ending to the 1999 - 2000 school year, the importance of the Student Crime Stoppers program came to light. Taking a proactive stance to assist in reducing critical instances in the new school year, Dr. Ben Marlin, Superintendent of Schools, and Jim Kelly, Chief of School Police, have approved a new awareness initiative of the Student Crime Stoppers program throughout the Palm Beach County school system.
